Bolsonaro detained after being considered a escape threat

The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
