British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
