Our Premier Record of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Top Spot.

At first glance, this work might appear closer to a challenging academic quiz rather than a new popular music project by a musician whose previous hit featured an international pop icon. Split across four separate movements and performed in 13 tongues, we have a dizzying orchestral-influenced work that delves into feminine mystique, religious ascent, and bodily change, frequently via the lens of various female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme treated with raw openness elsewhere—soars upwards on this record, carried by the lush presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself renders the work of contemporary pop stars look quite small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that this album manages to escape dry academic posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, and full credit belonging to the artist. While it's not her first project to fuse historical sounds with modern styles, its scale feel much greater here, with the balancing act far more dramatic. What truly raises her fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is a core spirit of joy. Much like the iconic Björk at her height, there is a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls you into its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart in two, you nevertheless want to stay alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

That playful energy comes forth clearly during the stunning piano-led song about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for several moments. Suddenly, all the music drops away, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle and a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral surge thuds in with comedic impact. The track then segues into the wild track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic with Lux lies in you never quite understand—or even want to predict—where you will go to next."

Almost each track finishes at a completely distinct point than where it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame with a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Another, a song echoing the artist's previous rhythmic work starts off dark and brooding, with menacing vocals, before sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to smooth its rough corners.

The Balance Between Art and Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act of the album involves navigating the line of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is little coincidence that it has become her highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of key markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track sung entirely in the English language swells on a refrain that feels to gather increasingly nagging hooks as it spins upward. This trick is echoed by another powerful track that grows and contracts, intertwining layered tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting a former lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry reach for high Art amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its own inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant source of buried treasure that takes time to fully mine but doesn't feels like a chore. While some major releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, Lux is a sumptuous banquet at which the guests at the table, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flit between conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about hopeless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly creative visionary.
