Seven alleged members of German far-left organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
