The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
